Pharmaceutical Waste Handling & disposal

Two different types of Pharmaceutical Medical Waste Containers, one 9 gallon container and one 5 gallon bucket

Handling Pharmaceutical waste safely on site:

“Pharmaceutical” waste is a prescription or over-the-counter human or veterinary drug, any article used or intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in humans or animals.

Pharmaceutical waste should be disposed of in a USDOT approved, properly labeled container. This container should be rigid, leak-proof, and puncture-resistant white and blue containers and clearly labeled "Pharmaceutical Waste – Incineration Only" or "Incineration Only."

Generally, in the State of California, pharmaceutical waste may be stored for up to “90-days when container is ready for disposal”. But this same regulation states that pharmaceutical waste containers must be changed (picked up) at least once per year. (CDPH MWMA Section 9, 118280f.)

Once pharmaceutical waste in container rises to the designated fill line, and the pharmaceutical container is permanently sealed and locked shut, Pharmaceutical waste containers should be placed next to all other types of medical waste containers, in the medical waste storage area, in preparation for transport and incineration.
